Introduce your side character to me—who is he?

Lyndon Grantly is a royal bodyguard.

What story is he from?

He is from POISON, Book Two in The Redwyn Chronicles.

What is his personality?

Lyndon can be snarky at times, and he has no qualms about being sarcastic to the prince he guards, but he can also be serious, especially when he is guarding the prince in an unfamiliar setting. He’s prone to maybe overexaggerating certain people’s threat level, and he’ll snarkily harass those he dislikes—after all, you can’t harm a royal bodyguard without grave consequences, something he uses to his advantage. Despite his orneriness, Lyndon is fully prepared to give his life to protect the prince.

What gave/gives you inspiration for him?

Lyndon is one of the few characters being developed as I write him. I know his purpose, I know what’s going to happen to him (unless the plot mutinies), but the primary source of inspiration for Lyndon is…Lyndon.

Was he supposed to be in the story, or was he a sudden I-have-no-idea-how-you-got-here addition?

His position was supposed to be in the story. I didn’t know what age the guard would be until I began writing. Keaton, the prince, needs someone to poke fun at him ever so often, and an older guard wouldn’t do that. Lyndon, on the other hand, readily does so.

What is his role in the story?

Lyndon keeps the prince out of most trouble and protects him from both barbed tongues and barbed arrow. Lyndon also adds comedic relief, as he is prone to being overdramatic at times.

“Where is everyone?” Lyndon asked. His hand remained on his sword as he scanned the area.

The jesting, arrogant man from the healer’s office was gone, replaced with a guard determined to do his duty.

What is his past and how has it shaped the character he is now?

I don’t know all of Lyndon’s past yet, but he was probably trained to become a bodyguard from a young age. While he took quickly to the sword, he failed any attempts to help him curb his sarcasm.

What is his greatest struggle or fear?

While I haven’t dove too deeply into Lyndon’ character to really probe, I imagine his deepest fear is failing to protect the prince.

Is he a vice or virtue to the protagonist?

He is both, almost in equal measure at times.

Does he like his name, or would he trade anything in the world for a new one?

He is fine with his name.

“Not a threat, my foot,” Lyndon muttered. “She walloped you!”

“I scared her.”

Disagreement scrunched Lyndon’s expression.

Character Appearance: Hair? Eyes? Height? Favorite color and least favorite food? Other?

Lyndon is tall with dark hair and green eyes. His favorite color is gray and his least favorite food is liver. He prefers horseback riding to walking and is known for sneaking cookies from the castle kitchen when not on duty.

    • SAME! 😀 He’s my kind of character. *grin*
I have a similar character from my steampunk(ish) story. The BEST comic relief and friend to my MC. ❤ I love writing him so much. Him and I are a lot alike. 🙂
